Who are we? Mary Wise & Grosvenor Antiques is the trading name resulting from the amalgamation of Mary Wise Antiques and Grosvenor Antiques Limited. Mary Wise Antiques was started in the late 1950s by George and Mary Wise on the retirement of the former from the Army. They had been collectors for many years, and traded in 18th century English porcelain and Chinese porcelain, together with jades and other Chinese works of art. The business passed to their daughter following their deaths in 1970. Stafford Lorie, Managing Director of Grosvenor Antiques Ltd., was a second generation dealer whose father was renowned as "the paperweight king" in the 1920s and 30s, and who traded as Lorie's of Wigmore Street, the business having been originally founded in 1914. Having started in his father's firm, Stafford Lorie struck out on his own, first as Stafford's of Bond Street. He founded Grosvenor Antiques Ltd. in the late 1950s, and the company traded for the next forty years, until, on his retirement in 1998, the two firms amalgamated as Mary Wise & Grosvenor Antiques. Between his father's firm and Grosvenor Antiques, Stafford Lorie had the distinction of exhibiting at every Grosvenor House Fair from the first in 1934 until 1999. In 2005 we relocated to 58 Kensington Church Street London, W84DB Mary Wise has had a successful career in the antiques trade for over thirty years. She serves on vetting committees for many major antiques fairs in the U.K. |
